Dear Dr. Liz,

On June 18, Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc., announced a voluntary recall of Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Food in the 5-lb and 28-lb bags with the "Best By" date of June 17, 2011. The recall is precautionary and is due to the potential for Salmonella contamination. The product was originally manufactured in one production run on December 17, 2009, and is the only Natural Balance product being recalled. The product was delivered only to pet specialty stores in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.  These therefore are the only states where product is being recalled.  If you don't live in these states but know someone who does, who buys or might be buying Natural Balance foods for their animals, please send this email along to them.

Natural Balance executives affirm that no illnesses have been reported to the company to date regarding these products. The company further states that the recall notification is being issued VOLUNTARILY because a random sample test conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had a positive result for Salmonella.

I've discovered that a respected independent lab testing facility AND Natural Balance's own internal testing were NOT able to duplicate the FDA's result.  The fact that results could not be duplicated made me very curious, suspicious even, especially since I know that Natural Balance spent over $900,000 creating their own internal quality control testing lab, quite possibly the best of its kind in the industry. My reaction therefore is to wonder WHO in the FDA did the testing, HOW it was done, and WHO the testers are connected to. If anyone knows, please share that information.

Natural Balance is a good company run by good people producing quality pet foods.  I am KEEPING Natural Balance on my overall recommended list.

About Salmonella
Salmonella affects human and non-human animals.  There is risk to humans and non-humans handling or consuming any foods contaminated with salmonella. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after having contact with any foods at risk for Salmonella contamination. Also thoroughly wash any surfaces exposed to such food products.

Salmonella infections in pets produce symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and/or abdominal pain. It is possible for an otherwise very healthy animal to be infected and a be carrier, infecting other animals, but not showing symptoms itself.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
